Far East Plaza
Year: 1984
Region: SINGAPORE
Located just off Orchard Road, in the heart of Singapore’s most fashionable shopping area, this mix of shopping, entertainment spaces and apartments is organised around two large atria connected by six storeys of shops. In this building RDC’s interest in “strata” is expressed internally. A progressive recession of upper floors creates a large entrance foyer, and a memorable sloping atrium. RDC also managed to persuade the client of the merit of receding the ground floor shop/restaurant frontages, thereby providing a positive connection with the street life outside. Since its construction the interior has been extensively fitted out with lighting which was not to the architect’s design and which tends to obscure the spatial character of the interior.
